Long Island broke the game open in the top of the fifth inning on a grand slam by Giovanny Alfonzo (3) for a 6-1 advantage.

“We were playing with fire all day. From the first inning on when they had the bases loaded,” said Somerset Patriots manager Brett Jodie. “We really held them down and minimized for a long period of time, but then gave up the big blow and that was the difference.”

Carlos Guzman launched a two-run home run (4) in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the lead to 6-3.

The Ducks added a run to the lead in the top of the seventh inning on a solo home run by Elmer Reyes (4) for the 7-3 final.

Matt Larkins (7-6) picked up the complete game win, striking out 12 batters and giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits over seven innings. A.J. Achter (2-1) suffered the loss, allowing two earned runs on four hits in two innings pitched.

The 2017 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home Aug. 17 with a 7:05 p.m. game against the Long Island Ducks. The game features a Post Game Fireworks Show presented by RWJBarnabas Health. For tickets, visit www.somersetpatriots.com.
