Dynamic Duo Lead SCVTHS Boys Basketball Team to a Successful Season

BRIDGEWATER, NJ - The Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School Jaguar boys’ basketball team ended its season with a 15-11 record and a state playoff berth.

However, this was not the only highlight of the season as the Jaguars had two standout players who stepped up to not only lead their team, but lead statistical categories in the state.

Elijah Bowers, a junior from Somerset, finished 8th among all New Jersey high school basketball players in three-point shots made with 83, 14th in the state for three-point shots made per game with 3.2, and 23rd in assists with 133.  Additionally, with over 18,000 votes, Bowers won’s fan poll entitled, “Who's is the best boys basketball 3-point shooter in the state?”

Bowers also became the fifth player in SCVTHS history to record 1,000 career points. He will aim to become the school’s all-time point scorer next year when he is a senior.

Yakim Jean-Philippe, a junior from Somerset, finished 2nd among all New Jersey high school basketball players in blocks with 135, 25th in total rebounds with 238, and 20th in total rebounds per game with 9.9.

“Elijah Bowers has been a highly effective scorer the last two seasons, but this year he brought his game to a new level,” said coach Mike McClain.  “He developed into a good rebounder and solid defender.  However his biggest improvement this season was his willingness and desire to involve his teammates on the offensive end as he finished in the top 25 in the state in assists.”

SCVTHS Boys Basketball Coach Mike McClain stated, “Yakim Jean-Philippe made huge strides this season.  It was really his first full season playing organized basketball.  Yakim played less than half a season as a sophomore, and during that time he showed the potential to be a good player.  However, his willingness to learn and put in hard work helped him become a big time impact player.”
