BRIDGEWATER, NJ - Girl Scout Troop 60046, of Hillside Intermediate School, earned its Bronze Award.
A Bronze Award in Girl Scouts is the highest honor a Junior Girl Scout can receive.
The girls decided to build a GaGa pit for their award. The GaGa pit would provide more activity at the Somerset Hills Swim Club (SHSC), and it encourages kids to be more active.
Troop 60046 worked over the past year to research, plan and build the GaGa pit. GaGa is a fast moving game similar to Dodgeball, and played in an octagonal pit.
The girls were elated to bring this game to their local community, as they enjoy playing it at their annual girl scout camp trip to the Poconos.
The girls have done a lot in order to succeed in achieving this goal. The troop attended many meetings to plan out the project and identify the supplies needed. The troop had to calculate the amount of money it would need in order to build it, plus they had to determine the best location for the pit, identify a way to inform others about the project, find solutions to some difficulties they may have faced building it and touch it up with wood stain in order to protect the wood for years to come.
Building materials were obtained with the help of Home Depot, Somerville Lumber and Bridgewater Stone Company. The troop, along with the assistance of some parents, dedicated two Saturdays to build the pit.
In this game, the ball can’t touch players' legs or feet. A player will hit the ball with his or her hands and try to get the opponents out.
Participants are not allowed to hit the ball more than one time in a row unless it hits the edge of the pit. If the ball happens to fly out of the pit, the player responsible is also out.
