Bridgewater, NJ – June 10, 2014 – The Dollar General Literacy Foundation recently awarded Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County a $3,000 grant to support adult literacy.

“Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County is thrilled to be the recipient of a generous grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation which will support our Basic Literacy tutoring programs,” said Jay Muldoon, Executive Director for Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County.  “We applaud the continued commitment of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to helping adults who struggle with basic literacy and education throughout the U.S. and we are grateful for their partnership.”

“At Dollar General, we are passionate about our mission of Serving Others throughout the communities we serve,” said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s chairman and CEO. “It’s exciting to see the Dollar General Literacy Foundation’s outreach in action as we partner with organizations to further education and literacy and make a real difference in people’s lives.”

Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County serves local adults whose inability to speak, read, and write in English is impeding them from reaching their personal and professional goals.  Services include one-to-one and small group tutoring, English Conversation Groups, and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes.  Instruction is goal-oriented, helping clients with their real-life literacy needs such as applying for a job, communicating with customers, reading to a child, passing the driver’s test, and gaining citizenship.  With improved literacy skills, clients become more effective employees, engaged parents, and active citizens.

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation is proud to support initiatives that help others improve their lives through literacy and education. Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $92 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than five million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.
