Local Students Named National Merit Scholar Finalists

BRIDGEWATER, NJ - A number of local students were named National Merit Scholars for the 2017 program, with scholarship awards to be given out in spring 2017.

There were five semifinalists named from the Bridgewater-Raritan High School, namely Ryan Jin, Trisha Kaundinya, Sneha Shivakumar and Daniel Wang. (The fifth student declined to be named.)

There were also a few Bridgewater residents from Pingry who were named as finalists. They were Daniel Hutt, of Martinsville, and Akash Kumar, of Bridgewater.

To enter the program, about 1.6 million juniors throughout the country took the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. About 15,000 semifinalists will advance to the finals and 7,500 scholarships will be offered next spring, totaling about $33 million.

Raritan Police: Warren Man Arrested for DWI and More in Police Blotter

RARITAN, NJ - A Warren man was arrested Feb. 1 for driving while intoxicated following a motor vehicle violation, according to a report from Raritan Borough Police.

Wayne Krause, 68, was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and speeding after being pulled over on Route 22 West.

Krause was processed and released pending a court appearance.

County Holding 5th Annual 5K Race to Wellness

BRIDGEWATER, NJ - The Somerset County Employee Wellness Committee is partnering with EmPoWER Somerset for the 5th Annual 5K Race to Wellness and 1-mile Fun Walk for county residents March 24.

The event, according to a release, is being held rain or shine at 9 a.m. at Duke Island Park, on Old York Road.

The 5K race is USATF certified.
