UPDATE: The driver and passenger of the vehicle have been identified, according to a new release from the Bridgewater Township Police. The vehicle was driven by John Gerwer III, a 30-year-old Somerville resident. The passenger was identified as Candice Gerwer, 34, of Pennsylvania.
BRIDGEWATER, NJ - Bridgewater Township Police are investigating a motor vehicle crash that killed the passenger after the vehicle struck a utility pole on Route 22 Saturday.
According to a police report, the crash occurred on Route 22 West, near North Adamsville Road, at about 12:55 p.m.
A 2003 Ford Mustang driven by a 30-year-old Somerville resident, police said, got on to Route 22 West from Ronson Road, but during a lane change, the driver lost control of the vehicle. According to the police report, the vehicle began to spin and struck a utility pole in front of the America's Best Value Inn.
The driver, police said, was ejected from the vehicle. He was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital New Brunswick by New Jersey State Police Medivac to be treated for serious injuries.
The 34-year-old female passenger, police said, was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset where she was pronounced dead.
On the scene were NJ State Police, Green Knoll Fire Department, North Branch Fire Department and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset Rescue Squad Unit 802 and Paramedic Units 681 and 682.
The crash is under investigation by the Bridgewater Township Police Department Traffic Safety Bureau. Any witnesses to the crash are being asked to contact Bridgewater Township Traffic Safety Officer John Kennedy at 908-722-4111, ext. 4162.
