Resource Center of Somerset to Hold Domestic Violence Awareness Month Events

Throughout October, the Resource Center of Somerset will be sponsoring various events to raise awareness about domestic violence.

SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ – October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and throughout the month the Resource Center of Somerset will be sponsoring various events to raise awareness about domestic violence as well as recognizing survivors and paying tribute to those who have lost their lives.

“At any given moment, 42,000 individuals are suffering from domestic violence and that’s just in Somerset County,” said Veronica Finlay, development director for the Resource Center of Somerset. “It is something that can happen to anyone regardless of race, religion or social-economic background. Anyone can be effected and it’s in every community in the county.”

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month and in an effort to increase awareness and raise much-needed funds to help victims and their families, the Resource Center of Somerset will hold the following services, campaigns and events throughout October:

Allstate Foundation Purple Purse Challenge

Now through Oct. 27 and sponsored by the Allstate Foundation, the Purple Purse Challenge provides an opportunity for people in the community to raise their voice and join together in the fight against domestic violence. The Allstate Foundation has allocated $500,000 in prizes to the challenge and the resource Center of Somerset is one of 160 teams from across the country competing for a chance to win prizes worth up to $100,000.

Additionally, as part of the Challenge, five purple purses will be making their way around businesses in the county through October. The location of the purses will be updated on the Resource Center of Somerset’s Facebook page, enabling supporters the opportunity to stop by the local business location and make a donation. Friends of the Shelter Annual Fall Author Luncheon

Since 1987, the Friends of the Shelter have raised $1.6 million for the Resource Center of Somerset and on Thursday, Oct. 15 will hold their Annual Fall Author Luncheon at the 
Basking Ridge Country Club. This year’s event will feature Pamela Redmond Satran, New York Times bestselling author of Younger - which is also a new TVLand series. The event begins at 10 a.m. and includes lunch, raffles, a 50/50 and specialty boutiques. For more information call (908) 507-3497 or email friendsoftheshelter@hotmail.com.

Harvesting Help & Hope

On Thursday, Oct. 22 at 6 p.m., the Resource Center of Somerset’s Board of Trustees, Event Planning Committee and staff will recognize its 2015 Award Honorees. The event, which will take place at the Ryland Inn in Whitehouse Station, will include entertainment, food stations and wine pairing. Senator Kip Bateman (R-16th L.D.) will serve as MC and speakers will include a domestic violence survivor.  Additional information is available at http://www.resourcecenterofsomerset.org/events/harvesting-help-hope-2015/.

Car Fire in Wendy's Parking Lot Deemed Not Suspicious, Bridgewater Police Say

BRIDGEWATER, NJ - Bridgewater Township Police responded to a car fire in the parking lot of Wendy's, on Route 22 East April 9, but the fire was not deemed suspicious, according to a report.

TRENTON, NJ - Sen. Christopher "Kip" Bateman (R-16) will introduce legislation to increase protections for family pets by requiring pet groomers to be properly trained and licensed following the deaths of three dogs in five months at different New Jersey pet salons.
