SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ - The Resource Center of Somerset has been selected to participate in the Allstate Foundation Purple Purse Challenge to raise awareness about domestic violence and financial abuse.

According to a release, the Allstate Foundation has allocated $500,000 to be awarded in prizes to the 150 organizations that provide help to victims of domestic violence, involved in the challenge.

With the help of the community, the release said, the Resource Center of Somerset can potentially win monteary prizes to help support the agency's programs.

One example of a challenge is to have the organization raise $100 on the web page to be entered for a chance to win $2,000. Challenge prizes, the release said, range from $500 to $10,000.

The Purple Purse Challenge was created to raise public awareness about domestic violence awareness, and a purse, the release said, represents a woman's financial domain.

The program itself will run from Sept. 2 through Oct. 3, and people can go to the team page for the Resource Center of Somerset at www.crowdrise.com/PurplePurse-RCS to make a donation or form a team under that umbrella.

The challenge, the release said, will provide monetary support to the Resource Center for the services that are offered free of charge to victims of domestic violence, including a safe house, transitional housing, 24-hour hotline, legal advocacy, counseling and more.
