Somerville Suspect Charged with Armed Robbery of Gaston Avenue Store

SOMERVILLE, NJ – A 22-year-old borough resident has been charged with armed robbery at a convenience store on Gaston Avenue, accoeding to Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson..

Jake Sommers, 22, of Eastern Avenue is lodged in the Somerset County Jail and faces charges of first degree robbery and third degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Police received a 911 call at 2:44 p.m on Wednesday reporting the robbery. Police interviewed the store clerk who told them that a white male wearing a red mask had entered the store brandishing a knife and demanded money.

The victim refused and a struggle ensued resulting in the victim sustaining lacerations to his face and the defendant sustaining a laceration to his head. The suspect was able to grab a plastic case containing lottery tickets before he fled the store. 

.One minute after the 911 call was received, a second call came in reporting that an injured man was observed running east towards Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset. Additional Somerville officers observed the individual, identified as Summers, in the back yard of an Eastern Avenue residential property.

After a brief foot chase he was apprehended by the officers and subsequently arrested.  The lottery tickets and the plastic case were located nearby. 

Detectives from the Somerville Borough Police Department along with the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit responded to conduct the investigation.

Sommers was treated at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset for his injuries before he was lodged in the jail.
