VanGilder, Arana Win Bound Brook Cycling Races

BOUND BROOK, NJ - Laura Van Gilder of Cresco, Pa. sprinted away from a three-rider breakaway to win the 20-mile women’s race at the Bound Brook Criterium today, a prelude to Monday’s 75th Tour of Somerville. Masha Schneider of Guttenberg, NJ was second and Dori Buckenthal of Glenwood, Maryland placed third.

The 54-year-old Van Gilder, the winningest female American cyclist ever, bested a field a 40 women, and will attempt.to win an unprecedented 5th women’s Tour of Somerville 25-mile race through the streets of the borough on Monday.

In the men’s 30 mile featured Bound Brook race, Sait Arana of Silver Spring, Maryland was victorious after he and four other riders took advantage of rain slickened streets to sneak away from 65 cyclists and eventually lap them. Second place went to Elvis Acevedo of Maywood, NJ, just ahead of Marcus Canady of Raleigh, NC.

Tour of Somerville racing action now shifts to tomorrow at 6 pm when 36 male and female cyclists will compete in 200-meter sprint races down Main Street in multiple heats of three or four riders each. The racing concludes Monday with the 75th edition of the Unity Bank Tour of Somerville, featuring seven races for riders of different skill levels beginning at 10:30 am. The featured multi-lap-event, the 50-mile Kugler-Anderson Memorial for professional and elite-level cyclists is set to roll off at around 3 pm

BRIDGEWATER, NJ - Bridgewater Township Police are investigating a report of a theft of more than $2,000 from a vehicle parked at the Home Depot, in the Bridgewater Towne Center, according to a report.
