BRIDGEWATER, NJ – Melissa Jenkins, one of the owners of BAM Desserts in Somerset, and Chef Liz Hernandez visited the Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School (SCVTHS) culinary arts classes this week in hopes to recruit students for the growing bakery.
Jenkins and Hernandez were looking for reliable students who were willing to learn new skills, get workplace experience and obtain an entrance into the field. In addition, they provided students with an inside look at working in and owning a bakery.
Jenkins, along with her partners Brande and Ari Fowlkes, started BAM Desserts in September 2017 because they “wanted something more flavorful.” While acknowledging the business is a lot of hard work, Jenkins said it has been a fun and fulfilling experience.
BAM Desserts creates custom cakes, cupcakes, cookies and specialty bunt cakes. BAM Desserts has also found success in providing sugar-free and vegan offerings.
Starting in the 2018-2019 school year, Melissa Jenkins will serve as a member on the advisory committee for the new created SCVTHS Restaurant Entrepreneurship and Management (REM) program. By including valuable community partners, SCVTHS will be able to build the REM program into a success.
