BRIDGEWATER, NJ - The Heart & Sole 5K Dog Run/Walk to raise money for the care of animals at the Somerset Regional Animal Shelter will be held Oct. 13 at Duke Island Park.

Proceeds from the event go predominantly toward the Cupid Fund, reserved for animals in need of costly medical treatment.

Participants will meet in front of the Welcome Center, with a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start for the 5K, and a family-friendly 5K walk beginning at 10:30 a.m. Walkers and strollers are permitted and children are welcome to attend, as are dogs for both the run and walk.

The top prize of a $250 gift card will be awarded to the participant with the highest amount of pledged donations. There will also be gift baskets raffled and registered participants will receive a t-shirt.

Registered dogs will also receive a goody bags.

In addition to vendors, raffles and a food truck, there will be a police K9 unit demonstration, and a special appearance by Somerset Patriots mascot Sparkee. Representatives from the County Animal Response Team will provide tips for animal care in emergencies, and activities will include a fall photo booth, a try-it agility course for dogs and a doggy costume contest.

The animal shelter has saved 4,295 animals in the last five years, with 996 animals being placed in forever homes and 300 strays reunited with their owners just last year. The shelter also takes in animals displaced in hurricanes around the country.

The 5K is organized by the Friends of the Somerset Regional Animal Shelter.
