BRIDGEWATER, NJ - A fire was reported in the wall at the new Trader Joe's, in the Bridgewater Promenade, Thursday morning, calling into question the store's planned Friday opening.
Fire trucks were called to the scene around 11 a.m. Thursday.
According to Bridgewater Township Police, the manager of the store said workers were welding in the back of the store and the fire alarm was activated. When the Finderne Fire Department arrived, they found a fire in the rear interior walls.
Police said damage to the store was contained to the rear of the building, and consisted of insulation and sheetrock damage. A hole was cut into the roof, police said, to ventilate the building.
The new store, the first Trader Joe's in Somerset County, was scheduled to officially open Friday in the former Golfsmith at the Promenade. There is no word yet on whether that can still happen, but Trader Joe's is expected to make an announcement soon.
Responding to the scene to aid with the investigation were Bound Brook Fire Department, Green Knoll Fire Department, Manville Fire Department, Robert Wood Johnson Ambulance, Bridgewater Township Health Department and Bridgewater Township Fire Official.
