"We are overwhelmed by the support from the residents of Camden and their faith in us to serve on the Board of Education,” Muhammad, Merricks and Gonzalez said in a joint statement to TAPinto Camden. “We are honored to follow in the footsteps of Martha Wilson and begin working for Camden families in the school district. We will continue the progress in our schools and make sure every student in Camden has the opportunity to receive a high quality education in a safe environment during these uncertain times."

Muhammad, 53, is the current board president, runs the Nation of Islam Muhammad's Temple of Islam No. 20. Gonzalez, 32, is a detective in Camden and Merricks, 60, founded local organization Universal Sisters United.

Of the 48,023 registered voters in the city, 21,953 cast ballots (45.7%) in the Camden school board race. Of those, 88 people voted via write-in.
