GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ - Camden County has surpassed 97,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses at over two dozen centers across the region, County Commissioner Jeff Nash said in a press conference Thursday morning.
Pharmacy and local vaccine hubs will ramp up their efforts based on new deliveries.
Over the weekend ,Cooper University Health Care also opened a Camden City site at the Salvation Army Kroc Center.
“We are at the mercy of the state and the mercy of the federal government [when it comes to vaccine deliveries],” Nash said. “You may have seen…this week that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine has been tentatively approved and awaiting final approval. No matter which of the three vaccinations you are scheduled or able to receive, my advice and the advice of the doctors and healthcare workers is to take the vaccination when it is available to you.”
Last week, the county, which has grown more optimistic with positive coronavirus trends, administered 1,680 vaccines in a single day. At Camden County College site in Blackwood, supported by Cooper and Jefferson Health, over 22,000 shots have been provided including 4,000 second doses and 18,000 first doses.
Nash noted improvements in the following categories:
- Last week total of 670 new positive cases (down from 721 the week before and more than 2,100 during first week of January)
- Infection rate of 0.88
- Positivity rate of 7.06%
- Average of 103 new positive cases a day
With help from local municipalities, the county also launched a senior vaccination project in early February.
“A part of that project included partnering with our senior housing units in Camden County, as well as our mayors and council members in our municipalities. [We] trained them by Zoom on how to register a senior…. Because many times seniors do not have access to mobile devices, they don't have access to computers, and even if they do many times is very difficult to navigate the website,” said Koren Norwood, health education supervisor for the county.
Nearly 1,000 seniors had their appointments - which stretched as far as October - moved to February. Officials said they define seniors as residents 65 and older.
What's more, Nash continued to encourage residents to sign up to their shot, as appointments will likely continue to be moved up with larger shot deliveries.
The county is currently around 39,000 positive cases and has confirmed over 1,000 deaths linked to the respiratory virus.
“We expect the trends to continue in a positive direction, but we should not allow these positive trends to give us a false sense of security,” Nash implored. “The virus is still there, it is hurting people each and every day, some very severely, it is upending our lives, businesses, families. There is nothing that is positive about a virus that has invaded our community. So it is important that everyone must do their part to protect ourselves.”
Toward the end of the brief, Caryelle Lasher, assistant public health coordinator, emphasized that while vaccines for other illnesses are also important, the COVID-19 vaccine should be residents' priority.
