CAMDEN, NJ — The city of Camden has now confirmed at least 1,007 positive cases of COVID-19 — a notable increase in the past month but a figure local officials say is due to more testing taking place.
The city, which has the most countywide, has also confirmed 19 deaths linked to the virus as of Monday.
Camden County outlined 48 new known deaths this evening that occurred between April 12 and April 30, as well as 105 additional cases.
That brings the county's total to 3,542 positive cases and 186 total fatalities.
“I am heartbroken to learn of this overwhelming loss of life in our community that has occurred in recent weeks," said Freeholder Director Lou Cappelli. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by this terrible disease, and we continue to wish all those who have contracted the virus a fast and full recovery."
Despite news of additional cases and deaths, Cappelli said Camden County hospitals "are not overwhelmed with patients," as is the case in other parts of the state.
Of the 48 new cases announced, 19 were long-term care facility residents, and 125 of the 186 known fatalities were traced to said centers.
Camden City will officially add a new testing site in the east part of the city Tuesday, where some local officials say more than half of the cases have been rooted.
“We have reached a difficult stage in this pandemic, one where the mixture of positive and negative developments can make it difficult to tell just how much progress we are making," Cappelli said. "Rest assured, we are better off today than we were two months ago when this pandemic began."
