CAMDEN, NJ — On the first day of Camden's new walk-up/drive-thru COVID-19 testing site Wednesday, approximately 50 people were tested, county officials told TAPinto Camden this evening.
The site, among South Jersey's first and the first able to handle walk-ups in the county, will be open through April 15 at Cooper's Poynt Waterfront Park.
Some 50 medical workers, wearing protective gear, gloves and masks, greeted walk-ups while those with appointments were mainly required to stay in their cars to be tested.
While initially by appointment-only, officials at the site later said anyone — regardless of appointment or insurance status — would receive some form of service.
Freeholder Director Lou Cappelli said today the best way to protect yourself from COVID-19 remains staying indoors for at least several weeks and adhering to Gov. Phil Murphy's statewide social distancing recommendations.
“At the same time, we are hopeful that by expanding access to testing, as well as to information, will help to reduce some of the anxiety in our community," Cappelli said. "This is a fight unlike anything we have experienced in decades, but if we work together and each do our part, we will persevere.”
Camden County, which has at least 289 cases as of Wednesday and at least six deaths, said it is weeks away from its own site at Camden County College's Blackwood campus.
“We are still working to secure the materials we need to open the site at Camden County College,” said Freeholder Jonathan Young. “In the meantime, we were able to collaborate with our healthcare partners in Camden City, who already had tests and PPE of their own, to get this site operational. Ultimately, any additional testing we can conduct provides us with greater insight than we had previously into the scope of the challenge we are facing.”
Camden's site was made possible through a collaboration between Cooper, Virtua and the Camden County Freeholder Board. It is located at 801 Delaware Ave. and will be open Monday to Friday from Noon to 4 p.m.
New Jersey is also keeping a running list of testing sites here.
