CAMDEN, NJ — A Gloucester Township man and a Pine Hill woman, both in their 60s, became the second and third COVID-19 deaths in Camden County, officials announced Monday evening.

“We are incredibly saddened by these tragic losses, and on behalf of the Freeholder Board and certainly the entire Camden County community, we send our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” said Freeholder Director Lou Cappelli.

The announcement brings the death toll in the county to at least three.

On Monday, officials also announced an additional 41 positive COVID-19 cases — the largest single-day spike thus far and raising the county total to at least 202.

The hospitalizations rate, officials said, remains at roughly 16 percent.

“Our sole objective at this time should be to minimize the loss of life caused by coronavirus to the greatest extent possible. Not a single death from this terrible disease can be considered acceptable. Everyone needs to follow the governor’s orders and stay home," said Cappelli. "By social distancing, we not only reduce the risk that we ourselves will contract the virus, but we also reduce the likelihood that we will serve as an unwitting means of transmission for the virus. Tonight, our community grieves with the families who have lost loved ones, and we send them our thoughts and prayers during this unprecedented moment in history.”

The additional 41 cases announced Monday includes three more in the city of Camden and nine additional in Cherry Hill — which now has nearly 60 cases.

Statewide, there are now at least 16,636 cases of COVID-19 and 198 deaths,  health officials announced as part of a daily press conference — with numbers in New Jersey dramatically rising as well.
