CAMDEN, NJ — With help from non-profit Touch New Jersey, freeholders will provide fresh food to the residents of Camden County this Friday.

The weekly food drives, aiming to lessen the burden of the COVID-19 pandemic on local families, began last week at Antioch Baptist Church and at St. John Baptist Church — where roughly 200 families walked away with 1,200 boxes of fresh vegetables, fruits, dairy and meat.

This week's will be held at Camden County College.

“The coronavirus pandemic has introduced new challenges and exacerbated existing inequities that cause food insecurity for families countywide," said Freeholder Jonathan Young. "These distributions are one of several initiatives the Freeholder Board has undertaken to ensure that no one goes hungry because of this crisis."

Gerald Davis, executive director of Touch New Jersey, told TAPinto Camden that his organization will also continue to host food drives on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. It will provide details and updates for the events online.

Freeholders said as far as this week's food drive, anyone in need can both walk or drive-up — leaving with approximately 24-lbs boxes of food on a first-come first-serve basis.

A two-box limit will be in effect for walk-ups, while residents in cars can receive as many as four.

A mobile unit, courtesy of the Camden health department, will also be handing out face masks, hand sanitizer and educational material on-site.

“We are continuing to work with our partners in the community to identify and serve residents in need. If you are facing food insecurity because of this pandemic, please join us or contact us so that we can get you the resources you need,” said Young.

The event Friday will begin at 11 a.m. the CCC's Parking Lot 6, located at 200 College Drive in Gloucester Township.

Details on other upcoming food drives, which are expected to run for the foreseeable future, will be available on the county website.
