CAMDEN, NJ — Officials on Tuesday announced a second positive COVID-19 case in the City of Camden and 18 additional cases in Camden County.

It represents a 43% increase of cases in the county — bringing the total to 59 cases and at least one death.

"[This] says two things to me: first, that testing is more widespread in the county and second, that we need to continue to isolate and aggressively socially distance to break the back of this virus,” said Freeholder Director Lou Cappelli.

The first death linked to the virus was announced Sunday night: a female in her 80s from Barrington.

Trace investigations are now underway for the new patients to determine if additional individuals may have been exposed.

On Tuesday afternoon, State Health Commissioner Judy Persichilli confirmed there are now 3,675 COVID-19 cases in New Jersey and 44 deaths — a surge of 846 positive cases and the largest single-day increase since the pandemic started.

“This is a sobering report,” Gov. Phil Murphy said during an update Tuesday. "This is by far our largest single-day report of new deaths.”

New Jersey currently ranks second in the nation in terms of confirmed case numbers.

“We need to be vigilant and I cannot underscore enough the need for residents to stay home," said Cappelli following the report of new cases. "I said it yesterday, and I will say it again, make no mistake, this will become a lifesaving operation in the future until we get an effective medicine or vaccine to treat COVID-19.”

The second City of Camden patient is a female in her 60s. No additional details have been disclosed at this time.
