CAMDEN, NJ — The New Jersey Department of Human Services is conducting a free distribution of naloxone, the opioid overdose reversal drug more commonly known as Narcan, at participating pharmacies today throughout the state.
The emergency medication will be given out one dose per person on a first-come, first-serve basis. Prescriptions or appointments are not needed, and participants are able to remain anonymous.
Naloxone can reverse overdoses from opioids by blocking the effects of the drug on the brain. Information regarding addiction treatment and recovery will also be provided to those who make the stop at the pharmacy.
“As we battle this epidemic, the ability to quickly administer naloxone is the difference between life and death for an individual in distress,” said Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli, Jr., liaison to the county's Addiction Awareness Task Force. “The scourge of heroin is ripping apart our families and killing our residents. It is imperative for all of us to arm ourselves and our communities with the tools needed to combat this crisis.”
The one-day distribution of free naloxone is part of a pilot program approved by the New Jersey Board of Pharmacy.
“With more than 3,000 overdose deaths in New Jersey last year, the (Gov. Phil) Murphy administration is taking action to empower residents to help prevent overdoses,” said Department of Human Services Commissioner Carole Johnson.
