CAMDEN, NJ — A heatwave is bringing temperatures in the triple digits and unhealthy air quality to the area this weekend, and it's important for Camden residents to be prepared.
The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for much of South Jersey until 10 p.m. Sunday. Heat index values are expected to reach 108 to 115 through the afternoon the next two days.
The NWS stresses that residents stay in an air-conditioned environment and out of the sun as much as possible. Keep to shaded locations, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and drink plenty of water.
Local officials have begun to distribute box fans to needy individuals in the community, Camden City spokesperson Vince Basara said. Fans can be requested from the Division of Senior and Disabled Services at 856-858-3220.
Officers from the Camden County Police Department will also be checking in on the elderly at different times, Basara said. Residents are encouraged to look out for family members and those that could be at risk from the heat.
