Looking to cool off on a hot summer night? Try granita, an icy dessert that is easy to make and requires no time in front of the stove.
Originally from Sicily, granita is a shaved ice treat made from sweet, ripe fruit that’s puréed and frozen. Ours tastes like white sangria and includes a generous pour of Moscato for the 21-and-over crowd.
Serve yourself this adults-only snow cone and let the kids have all the ice cream — at least for tonight.
Boozy White Sangria Granita
2 ripe peaches or nectarines, peeled and pitted
6 strawberries, hulled (divided, 2 for garnish)
A pinch of salt
¼ cup sugar
1 Tbs. lemon juice
1 Tbs. triple sec
½ cup cold water
2 cups sweet Moscato, preferably flat
Buzz four of the strawberries and everything else in a blender until smooth. Pass the purée through a fine mesh strainer, pushing it through with the back of a spoon, if necessary. Pour into a 9” x 13” baking pan. Skim the foam from the top, cover with plastic wrap and freeze overnight or for 12 hours.
Once frozen solid, scrape the surface with a fork to form flakes of granita. Mash larger pieces to break them apart. Work quickly to avoid melting, but if it starts to thaw, place back in freezer for 30-60 minutes.
Slice remaining strawberries. Serve granita in chilled bowls or glasses and garnish with strawberry slices.

25 minutes plus time to freeze overnight
