“Smith was being taken back to Ancora after receiving treatment at an area hospital for a minor injury around 10:30 p.m.,” officials said in a news release. “When the car Smith was in stopped at a red light at the intersection of Rt. 73 and Cross Keys Road, hospital workers said he took off running.”

According to investigators, Smith broke into a resident’s shed and another resident’s car where he slept. Police added that he then went back to the shed and stole a bike.

After multiple tips over Smith’s location early Wednesday morning at about 7 a.m., officers responded to Franklin Avenue in Berlin Township where Smith was reportedly seen riding the bike he stole from the shed.

He was then taken into custody and later sent to the Camden County Correctional Facility to await a detention hearing.

The collaborative search included officers from the CCPO, BTPD, NJ Transit Police, the Voorhees Township Police Department, Cape May County Sheriff’s Department, Human Service Police and the Camden County Office of Emergency Management.
