The Morris County Division of Transportation will host a free Savvy Cyclists bike training course Saturday, June 5, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Great Swamp Education Center in Chatham.
Denise Chaplick, the Division's Principal Planner-Transportation, said the day-long instructional program will be conducted by Bike NYC, a nonprofit group that promotes and encourages bicycling and bicycle safety.
According to Bike NYC, the June 5 bike training course is aimed at adults and mature teens who want to improve their cycling skills; new cyclists who want to learn the basics; those returning to cycling from a long hiatus; people who want to be more independent on their bike; and those who feel a little nervous while cycling in traffic.
The mostly hands-on class will cover such topics as adjusting the bike and helmet for a comfortable fit; performing a safety inspection of the bike to make sure everything is working properly; understanding traffic principles and bicyclists' rights and responsibilities on the road; fixing a flat tire; using the bike's gear system; locking the bike; and bike handling drills.
A deposit is required to sign up for the course, but the deposit will be returned upon attendance. Registration information may be obtained by calling Bike NYC at (212) 932-BIKE, ext. 159, or by visiting http://www.bikenewyork.org.
