With a name like Bill & Harry’s, you certainly cannot assume that their establishment is a well known and respected, Chinese restaurant specializing in gourmet Chinese food. However, as a food writer who is always searching for  really delicious Chinese food, I was thrilled when a friend called to rave about Bill and Harry’s in East Hanover.

Certainly not located round the corner from Westfield, New Jersey, but certainly worth the trip. we visited the delightfully pleasant restaurant last weekend, and were really impressed with the smiling staff, and delectable, delicious offerings.

Located in an unassuming Strip Mall, the simply designed, restaurant boasts crisp, white walls, several mounted prints, and perhaps tables of four or five that could seat fifty people. Set with crisp, white tablecloths, gleaming silverware, and small vases filled with assorted flowers, the ambiance suggests peaceful, quiet surroundings filled with the anticipation of a really fine meal.. Adding to first impressions was a refreshing glass of water replete with a wedge of lime. Certainly not something we’d expect when we’re accustomed to dropping in a wedge of lemon for a tangy, cool taste, but it was definitely a refreshing addition to our evening meal.

As a first impression, proprietors New York residents Jason Long and Wai Lee are constantly responding to the silent-ring of the telephone, while servers are constantly there to assist their clientele.

Of course we started with several Egg Rolls, a Vegetable Spring Roll, ($7.00), plus a small order of Barbecued Spare Ribs, ($9.00). Done to-a-turn, we could have easily made a meal of several orders of Barbecued Spare Ribs. Next we each had a bowl of soup. From Bill and Harry’s Wonton Soup (for two), Hot and Sour Soup, and an order of Egg Drop Soup, the soup is nourishing and delicious, while portions are certainly generous.
Divided into Dining Preferences visitors to Bill and Harry have the privilege of choosing entrees from their Gourmet Menu featuring Shrimp & Scallops with Walnuts ($15.00); Lake Tung Ting Shrimp, jumbo shrimp stir-fried with broccoli, snow peas, baby corn, and red pepper in a white wine sauce, ($13.50); and Orange Flavored Chicken, Beef, or Shrimp, deep fried and sautéed with an orange flavored, tangy, brown sauce, garnished with fresh broccoli, ($12-$14); Shrimp with Snow Peas, feature Jumbo Shrimp sautéed with seasonal vegetables in a white wine sauce, ($12.50); Sizzling Shredded Pork with garlic Sauce is sautéed with water chestnuts, celery, and wooden ear mushrooms in a garlic, chili brown sauce, ($10.00), while a Platter of Shrimp & Scallops with walnuts, ($15.00), or Crispy Scallops with walnuts, ($14.00), are deep fried and sautéed with snow peas, and red pepper in chefs specially tangy red sauce with walnuts. As a seasoned specialty the ever popular Spa Platter, Steamed Shrimp with Broccoli, arrives on a sizzling hot plate with a delightful sauce, ($12.50).

The jumbo shrimp that accompanied my Shrimp with Hunan sauce, were sautéed with seasonal vegetables and snow peas in a white wine sauce. ($12.50). But you may certainly order Chicken with String beans, Sweet and Sour Chicken, Chicken with Black Bean sauce, Hunan Chicken or Chicken prepared just the way you like it, ($10.00).

Except for Sunday and Holidays, there is a Lunch Menu. Lunch Specials are served with Fried Rice or fluffy Steamed Rice. Menu specialties included: Diced Chicken & Shrimp, Beef with Broccoli, Pepper steak with Onions, Hunan Beef, shredded Beef Szechwan Style, ($7.00), and so much more.

For Dessert, each person at our table received a Fortune Cookie while fresh, juicy, and delicious, quartered oranges were presented on a plate for all to share. It’s not your typical Chinese Restaurant, but Bill & Harry Chinese Cuisine is one that you should visit and enjoy!

To the Editor,

I told my daughter I needed to write about gun violence. Know what she told me? “Mom, be sure you’re not too polarizing. People won’t listen.” She’s right. At age eleven she’s figured out that we adults need to be reminded how to speak to one another in order to fix a problem. But I have hope and belief that we can fix that discourse in our ...
