CHATHAM, NJ - Tony Vivona, chairman of the Zoning Board of Adjustment, reported to the Chatham Township Committee on the workings of the board in 2013 on Thursday night and cited just one problem -- the "misinformation'' spread about AT&T's application to the board.

AT&T applied for a variance to place 12 cell phone antennas on the American Water Co. tower located at 63 Buxton Road. Residents of Buxton Road, Huron Drive and Kincaid Lane have opposed the move as AT&T presents experts on all aspects of the project to the board.

"A bigger deal is the water tower antennas," Vivona said. "I think there was a lot of misinformation that was circulated that got a lot of residents worked up and we're trying to get all of the facts in place to address most of their concerns. But it's an ongoing thing at the moment."

Committee member Curt Ritter asked Vivona to explain what he meant by "misinformation," and Vivona responded.

"I think the biggest misinformation was that people were under the assumption that these gigantic things were going to be put up, like there are behind this building," Vivona said. "The antennas are actually below the top of the water tower.  The antennas would be painted the same color as the water tower. There would be three banks of four antennas. We're trying to show the residents that it won't be an eyesore."

Vivona was interrupted by Albert Cruz, township attorney, who noted that the decision from the board was pending and shouldn't be discussed further.

The hearing on AT&T's variance before the board of adjustment is scheduled for March 20 in the township municipal building.

Dear Editor:

At the April 16th Board of Education meeting, Board member Sal Arnuk stated: “I am ashamed to see the district at the bottom of the list in per-pupil spending.”  On the contrary, Board member Arnuk should be exceedingly proud of how our Board of Education is able to consistently be ranked as the top school district in our state at the cost it currently spends per ...
