To the Editor:
I was pleased to see that President of the Chatham Jaycees, Bill Heap, addressed the Board of Education over spending $2.5M for a new administration building in lieu of remaining in its current space in Chatham Township.
Yes, while the $2.5M is available and does come out of the capital budget, the funds should be held aside for when a capital expense for additional classroom space or improvements to STEM programs are needed.
As you drive into Chatham Borough off of Route 24, you are immediately greeted by signs “Commercial Space Available.” The BOE should explore all space available in The Chathams before committing to spending $2.5M just because the money is there. Having a capital “rainy day” fund is a sound idea. Building an administration building seems questionable to me.
