Our beloved Carolyn left us on August 15, 2018 after a year-long battle with breast cancer. She leaves behind her husband, Michael Hanna; sons, Jack and Colton Hanna; parents, Nancy (nee Lindars) and Jack Smith; brother, Kyle Smith; and sister, Grace Smith; along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, and her Hanna in-laws, Ned, Richard, Sophie, Samson and Vera.
Carolyn was heroic in her fight to overcome her cancer and was always positive in her mindset. Her mantra was “never give up, never give in” and she stayed strong until her last day. She was dedicated to her two boys and husband Mike, a loving mother, wife, daughter, sister, niece, and friend.
Born in Summit, NJ, Carolyn spent her childhood in Chatham, NJ and graduated from Chatham High School. She was an accomplished dancer, gymnast, and varsity cheerleader and was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Chatham Township. She excelled in art, garnering a scholarship and an award at high school graduation. Some of her fondest memories were of the many fun filled summers spent at the Noe Pond Club with friends and family.
Carolyn was a 2007 graduate of Radford University in Virginia where she was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority holding positions on the Executive Board such as Treasurer and was a driving force as a sister. She was also a Kappa Sigma Little Sister. She loved her years at Radford and made lifelong friends that have supported her in the past year with remarkable love and spirit.
After graduation Carolyn moved to Richmond, VA, where she made her home and met the love of her life, Mike, whom she married in 2011. She worked at Ukrop’s Dress Express, Media General, Tri-state Expedited Services Inc. and UPS. More recently, Carolyn joined River Road Presbyterian Church and Avalon Swim Club, she loved attending Ladies Night, working on house projects, gardening, any social activity with friends, rooting for her NY Giants and mostly spending time with all her boys. Our beautiful, funny, dancing Carolyn lit up the room when she entered with her smile and contagious laugh. Known for her quick wit, beauty, and love of friends - always the life of the party. She will be missed by all of us and we will never forget her.
A memorial ceremony will be held on Friday, September 14 at 11:30 am in Chatham, NJ at the Presbyterian Church of Chatham Township. Located at 240 Southern Blvd. Lunch immediately following at the church. In Carolyn’s spirit, please dress in bright and cheerful colors.
In lieu of flowers, a college fund for the boys has been set up.
