The Chatham Borough Democratic Committee is pleased to announce its endorsement of Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (D - 11th Congressional District) in her reelection bid for Congress.
Chatham Borough Council Member, Len Resto, praised Congresswoman Sherrill’s ability to work with both sides of the aisle. Said Resto, “Congresswoman Sherrill campaigned on being a moderate and representing all constituents in her district. She has been true to her word. Ms. Sherrill is able to reach across the aisle and get things done in bipartisan fashion, the way it should be.” Mr. Resto is a former Republican who switched his party affiliation to Democrat in 2019.
Commitee Chair, Pat Soteropoulos, observed, “Mikie Sherrill provides excellent constituent service. She is a frequent presence at community events and holds regular town halls to interact directly with her constituents. She is also laser-focused on the issues that matter to New Jerseyans the most.”
In her first term in Congress, Ms. Sherrill co-sponsored the bipartisan “SALT Relief & Marriage Penalty Elimination Act of 2019”. The bill seeks to raise the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction cap of $10,000, which was imposed in the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. The 2017 Act raised taxes for many New Jersey residents, including in Sherrill’s district. As the appointed Chairwoman of the House Science Subcommittee on Investigations and Oversight, Ms. Sherrill also co-sponsored the bipartisan “Securing American Science & Technology Act of 2019”, which would establish an interagency working group to safeguard federally-funded research and development at academic institutions from foreign espionage.
Furthermore, Congresswoman Sherrill has been a stalwart advocate for the Gateway Project, which would fund badly, needed repairs to the current 100+ year-old tunnels between New York and New Jersey and creates two additional rail tunnels. “This is an important project for the economic viability of our region,” continued Resto, who is also President of the New Jersey Association of Railroad Passengers, a rail advocacy group. Resto added, “Representative Sherrill’s staff has been extremely helpful and effective on issues ranging from restoring the 501(c)(3) status for the Gay Activist Alliance in Morris County (GAAMC), to speeding up a PPP loan for a local business in Chatham Borough. Every issue brought to her attention was handled with a sense of urgency and effectively. Regardless of party affiliation, if you want effective government service for New Jerseyans, vote to reelect Congresswoman Sherrill.”
