CHATHAM, NJ - Following through on a request by Jim Rilee of Bottle King for expanded store hours on Sundays, the Borough of Chatham Council introduced an amended ordinance by a 6-0 vote on Monday that will allow Chatham Borough licensed liquor stores to open at 10 a.m. on Sundays.

The current ordinance allows for a 12 noon opening time on Sundays. The amendment will be up for adoption at the Feb. 13 meeting of the borough council.

Rilee had come before the council in October to make is request.

Before the vote was taken, council member Gerald Helfrich asked that the amendment be simplified to state hours of operation during weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Chatham Borough attorney James Lott had included a color chart, which included specific hours of operation for holidays such as Christmas and New Year's Day. Helfrich noted that half of the complicated chart could be eliminated with the end of detailed holiday schedules.

Helfrich's suggestion to ignore the holidays and go with the simplified version was agreed to and voted on, allowing the streamlined amendment to the borough code on regulating the sale of alcohoilic beverages to move forward. The public hearing is set for Feb. 13.
