CHATHAM, NJ - On February 2 at 10:15 p.m., Chatham Borough Police responded to a hit and run crash at the intersection of South Passaic Avenue and Main Street. A black Jeep was traveling north on South Passaic Avenue when it struck the side of a NJ Transit bus that was traveling east on Main Street.

The driver of the bus, as well as a third party witness, stated the bus had a green light. The Jeep fled the scene, leaving behind the front license plate. The Jeep was followed to a residence on Jackson Avenue by a witness to the crash. Sergeant Rick Jaremba responded to Jackson Avenue and after a brief investigation arrested Christopher Carlin, age 49, charging him with DWI.

Carlin was processed at headquarters and released to a family member. He was additionally charged with: Refusal to provide breath samples, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and hindering his own apprehension.

All persons charged with an offense are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
