CHATHAM, NJ - The beginning of the Chatham boys cross-country preseason felt different than past seasons for senior captain Alex Williams.

"I've had Colin (Logsdon), Liam (Cadden) and Bo (Raadam) in front of me for the entirety of high school, so without them here, it's kind of weird because I don't have anyone to chase down during workouts," Williams said. "We're making adjustments and getting used to it. Everyone has a positive outlook and we're excited about what we think we can do."

Without the 1-2 tandem of Logsdon and Raadam, Chatham coach Patrick Barry is counting on his team's depth.

"We have to find a way to become a good team without having that one-two punch up front," Barry said. "I think we're more solid starting. Last year, we had one, two and then a big gap between No. 3. The whole group seems father up the line. I think we have a stronger pack of five, six runners."

That pack includes the junior trio of Sam Viola, Anthony Scerbo and Alec Gironda, along with senior Patrick O'Brien and sophomore Greg Himstreet.

Other runners to watch are seniors John Romano and Yuwen Zhang.

Chatham opens Sept. 8 at the Roxbury Invitational.
