SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- Mark Albarez and Aiden Kagan each won individual races and also swam on the winning 200 medley relay as the Chatham boys swim team upset No. 15-ranked Scotch Plains-Fanwood, 91-79, in the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group B sectional semifinals on Tuesday at the Scotch Plains-Fanwood YMCA.
Chatham (11-2) will face Montgomery in the state sectional final on Friday.
"Everyone showed up today and swam the best that they could," Chatham head coach Frank DiGiacomo said. "We're looking ahead to facing Montgomery. They have a really fast team, but we have a lot of guys who are fast, too. We are going to keep on working hard to prepare for them."
Albarez won the 100 butterfly and Kagan took the 100 breaststroke for the Cougars and both competed on the 200 medley relay with Kyle Beebe and Ryan Snarr to place first place in 1:43.18.
"Sweeping the 100 Fly and the 100 Breast was huge for us," Chatham senior captain Phillip Puccio said. "I'm really proud of the way we swam today, and now we have to prepare for Friday."
Scotch Plains-Fanwood coach Jess Hulnik said she was proud of the way her team performed all year.
"We had some good times today, and we overall swam well. We knew Chatham would be a tough opponent, they always are," Coach Hulnik said. "We are a young team, a very young team, and I'm encouraged about the future."
