CHATHAM, NJ - According to Chatham Borough Police Chief Philip Crosson, one driver actually slowed down to ask the police what was going on--while he was driving and talking on his cell phone.

That driver was one person who was ticketed by Chatham Police during a four-hour period of enforcement of driving and texting laws.

"We studied our statistics from 2010 and 2012, and 46 percent of our accidents downtown were caused by driver inattention," Crosson said. "It's something we take very seriously."

On Friday Nov. 22, the Chatham Borough Police Department conducted a special enforcement detail on Main Street - at the intersection of Coleman Avenue from  from 7 a.m. until 11 a.m..  The purpose of this detail was to target motorists using hand-held wireless telephones and raise awareness of the dangers of using such devices while driving.

A total of 8 officers took part in the detail with two officers acting as spotters. The variable message sign was placed at the west end of Main Street, approximately five days prior to the detail.  The sign warned that the use of hand-held wireless telephones while driving was illegal and those violations will be strictly enforced.

A total of 72 summonses were issued with 61 of these summonses issued for Use of Hand-Held Wireless Telephones.  During the detail, a volume count was conducted that resulted in 4800 vehicles passing that location.

Imagine a Chatham Toboggan Ride from the Top of Fairmount Avenue to Main Street

Those were the days!

This was back in the early to mid-1900s. The Passaic River meandered through grassy meadows and woods on the north side of Chatham. The marshy ...

At age eleven she’s figured out that we adults need to be reminded how to speak to one another in order to fix a problem. But I have hope and belief that we can fix that discourse in our ...
