CHATHAM, NJ - Temperature checks and conditioning in groups of 10 were the rule of the day for the Chatham football team during its belated "open season" of training for the 2020 season.

The Cougars completed Phase I of the NJSIAA's plan for returning to scholastic athletics on Tuesday with conditioning at Cougar Field. Mike Colavita, Chatham athletic trainer, checked temperatures before each of the two training sessions to guard against the Coronavirus pandemic.

Chatham will be off until Aug. 10 when Phase II begins. Contact training won't begin until Sept. 14 with the hopeful date of Oct. 2 as the season opener at home vs. West Essex.

"I'm excited," Chatham coach Dan Czepiga said. "There are a lot of sophomores that were here when I came that are now seniors. I'm looking forward to seeing that class through. Right now, we have a roster of 97 and I'm looking to get that up to 100 for the season."

During the early session on Tuesday, senior wide receiver Frank Barbera (see video below) and Sean McArthur tied for the best times in the 40-yard dash at 4.59.

Senior McArthur also had the top time in the "L" drill (see below), finishing in 7.59, barely faster than junior Collin Fitzgerald.
