CHATHAM, NJ - Maddie Hartnett scored nine points, including three free throws in the final minutes, to help the Chatham girls basketball team defeat Morristown, 29-25, for the Morris County Tournament JV Championship on Saturday at Chatham High.
The JV MCT final turned out to be the rubber match between Chatham and Morristown, which had split two regular-season matchups. Chatham coach Lindsay Atchison prepared the Lady Cougars for Morristown's pressure defense.
"They don't give you a lot of time to set up your offense, so I told my girls we'll stick to our motion set and they will need to read and react," Atchison said. "Maddie Hartnett did a great job of getting to the basket taking it herself, or dropping it off to our post, Shannon Donohue."
With about three minutes left in the tight battle, Olivia Mathern knocked the ball away from a Morristown player and Donohue threw herself on the ball while Atchison called timeout.
"That really got the crowd into it and the girls pumped up," Atchison said. ":Down the stretch they began to foul. Hartnett made three of four free throws in the final minutes and Emma Frohnapfel made the front end of a one-and-one to finally turn it into a two-possession game with 10 seconds to go.
Frohnapfel, Mathern, Donohue finished with six points apiece for the Lady Cougars.
