MONTVILLE, NJ - Catherine McNiff, Frances Workman, Abby Morgan and Emilie de Keyzer each scored a goal in the second half, powering Chatham to a 10-9 girls lacrosse victory over Mendham in the semifinal round of the Morris County Tournament on Thursday.
Chatham (9-5) advances to meet Mountain Lakes for the MCT Championship, set for 7 p.m. Saturday at Montville High. It will be the third straight meeting between Chatham and Mountain Lakes in the MCT title game, with Montville winning in 2014 and 2016 and the Lady Cougars taking the 2015 crown.
"One of our team goals for the season was to make it back to the final game in the county tournament, so we are really psyched to get back to the game," Chatham coach Hilary Renna said. "Mendham is a really good team, so to beat them twice in one week gives us a lot of momentum going into the final game."
On April 23, Chatham defeated Mountain Lakes, 8-7, in a regular season game at Mountain Lakes.
The MCT semifinal vs. Mendham was tied 6-6 at halftime and a run of three straight goals in the second half staked Chatham to a 9-7 lead. Emilie de Keyzer's second goal of the game with 7:35 pushed the Chatham lead to 10-7.
Mendham (8-7) scored the final two goals, including its last with 1:01 showing. Goalie Kat Friday, who ended with 12 saves for Chatham, made a late stop and Julia Doria came up with a big ground ball to run out the clock.
Morgan led the way for the Lady Cougars with three goals and an assist. McNiff and de Keyzer scored two goals apiece while Workman, Zoe Kraus and Schuyler Bixby netted a goal apiece in the win.
