TOMS RIVER, NJ - Chatham High School’s Sailing team placed 5th of 15 schools at the New Jersey Interscholastic Sailing Association BBYRA Fall Invitational, held Saturday at Toms River Yacht Club.
With winds ranging from 5 to 12 knots, a total of 18 teams from 15 schools raced in two separate A and B Division fleets for four-plus hours, on a picture-perfect, sunny and brisk fall day on Toms River.
Chatham’s 1st team A Division, sailing in FJ’s, was led by senior skipper and co-Captain Thomas Marino and junior crew Paige Lubrano, who teamed up to sail all 10 races. Chatham’s B Division, sailing in Club 420’s, was led by sophomore skipper Jamie Lynch and junior crew Jonathan Field, who also sailed all 10 races in B Division.
Marino & Lubrano showed steady improvement throughout the day, highlighted by a 2nd place finish in race A7, as well as three 4th place finishes. Lynch and Field consistently posted finishes in the top half of the B Division fleet, including a 5th place finish in race B2 and four 6th place finishes. The combined A and B Division scores placed Chatham’s 1st team in 5th place out of 18 teams racing on the day.
Chatham’s 2nd team was led by senior skipper and co-Captain Ryan McWalters and junior crew Allison Baun in A Division, while B Division was led by senior skipper/crew and co-Captain Ciara Doherty, senior skipper/crew Veloce Scott and senior crew Milos Buchberger. Chatham 2 placed 13th of 18 teams.
Coach Kimberly Sinatra noted the team’s strong performance, "The team has been practicing so diligently for this moment. They are the first team on the water and were the last to leave the regatta. The conditions were tricky and it was a mental and physical game. It brings me so much pride to see their hard work paying off in what we call the "final test" for sailing. The team brought the Cougar spirit and did a wonderful job."
Chatham’s strong finish at the BBYRA Fall Invitational comes on the heels of a 5th place finish (of 12 schools) the previous weekend at the NJISA Fall Classic Regatta, also held at Toms River Yacht Club. The team’s league schedule continues Saturday at the NJISA Fall Foliage Regatta in Toms River, in advance of the NJISA Fall Championship on October 31st.
