MILLBURN, NJ - Fear the Gear, Chatham High School’s robotics team, sent members to the Northern New Jersey Outreach Scrimmage at Millburn High School. Junior co-captain Paul Malatesta, sophomore Ted McCarthy and freshman Yuwen Zhang represented CHS, bringing last year’s tournament robot out of retirement for one last game.

The main focus of this event was to mentor new teams competing for the first time this fall. Fear the Gear was partnered with three girls from Team Simpatico, Rebecca Tashjian, Lori Tashjian and Michaela Lagana from West Milford. New Jersey FTC (First Tech Challenge) officials loaned the rookie teams “baby bots” to modify and get ready for the day’s game.

Fear the Gear members observed the girls’ engineering and guided their computer programming. The new season kicks off on September 12 at Livingston High School when the new game will be revealed. Fear the Gear will be joined by a second CHS team this year, mentored by Technology teacher Julianna Ryan.
