CHATHAM, NJ - No one on the Chatham boys basketball team brings it up or mentions it, but Cougar guard Jack Rooney is close to becoming the sixth player in school history to score 1,000 points.

The junior will take 982 career points into the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 state tournament semifinal when No. 2 seed Chatham (20-7) plays host to No. 3 Orange (20-7), 7 p.m. Saturday at Chatham High.

Two years ago as a freshman, Rooney scored nine of his 18 points in the fourth quarter when Chatham edged Orange, 68-66, also in the sectional semifinal.

Last year, Colin McKenna came one point short of reaching 1,000, scoring 16 points in Chatham's 52-46 double-overtime loss to Warren Hills in the sectional final, ending with 999 points.

No matter what happens this season, Rooney will get a chance to challenge the all-time Chatham boys scoring record of 1,310 points set by Billy Oliver from 2005 through 2008.

The Chatham High Boys Basketball 1,000-point club:

1-Billy Oliver 1,310 (2005-'08). 2-Terry Power 1,208 (1969-'73). 3-Greg Bienemann 1,073 (2004'09). 4-Jeff Palma 1,062 (1994-'98). 5-Paul Devine 1,026 (1998-'01).
