WATERLOO, NJ - Chatham Scouts turned in an impressive performance at this month's regional Klondike Derby, an all-day skill competition and sled race, held at the Mount Allamuchy Scout Reservation.
Boy Scout Troop 8 fielded four teams. Its Senior teams finished 2nd and 3rd out of 16 teams, and its Junior teams (13 and under) finished 3rd and 6th out of 16 teams.
BSA Troop 280, Chatham's BSA Troop for girls, finished 2nd and 4th among the 16 Junior teams, 13 of which were all-boy teams. They built their newest sled from scratch using wood and rope lashings (pictured in front).
Stages of the race included fire building, shelter building, pioneering, orienteering, cooking, nature study, Scout lore, and others.
Twenty-one towns were represented in the regional competition at Mount Allamuchy Scout Reservation, and no towns fielded as many sleds as Chatham.
