CHATHAM, NJ - Chatham softball coach Brian Figueiredo was pretty happy that his team was able to get outside for the second time this preseason.

And it became even more pleasurable for the coach when the Lady Cougars scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to win their scrimmage against Caldwell, 5-3, on Tuesday at Shunpike Field.

"It's never too early to win, especially pulling it out in the last inning," Figueiredo said.

Chatham took an early lead in the bottom of the first when Kaitlin Pinaire doubled and scored on a two-out single by Sarah McCabe.

Sophomore right-hander Julia Yukniewicz pitched four scoreless innings for Chatham, striking out the side in the second and mixing in a changeup with her slider and screwball to finish with seven strikeouts.

"The umpire was calling a low strike zone and that helped because she was throwing low strikes," Chatham catcher Pinaire said. "She was hitting the outside corner."

Caldwell pushed across three runs in the top of the sixth to grab a 3-1 lead before Chatham rallied in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore Lili Elston's RBI double drove in Kerri McNelis with the first run of the seventh for Chatham before junior Elizabeth Poillucci singled across two runs. Jemma Thorne singled home the final run.

LADY COUGAR NOTES: Sophomore center fielder Jessica Vespasiano made a nice running catch of a ball hit into the right-center gap in the top of the third inning ... Sarah McCabe had two hits and pitched a scoreless top of the seventh to earn the scrimmage mound win ... senior co-captain Anna Lengner was unable to play because of an illness.
