CHATHAM, NJ - Although the student population seems to be leveling off, there is a need to add first-grade teachers at both Southern Boulevard School and Washington Avenue School, according to Chatham Superintendent Michael LaSusa.
LaSusa reported (see video below) at the Chatham Board of Education meeting on Monday night that the district's student enrollment stood at 4,100, slightly below the 4,170 total from the last school year.
There are 117 students for five sections of first grade at Southern Boulevard School, an average of 23 students per class. A planned sixth teacher will reduce that per-class size to 19.
At Washington Avenue, the first-grade class of 98 students would average out to 24 per class, compared to the plan of an additional teacher that would reduce average class size for the five sections to 19 students.
