Chatham Township Committee Unanimously Adopts Ordinance to Ban Marijuana Retail Sales; Cannabis Advocates Disagree

CHATHAM, NJ - Chatham Township Mayor Curt Ritter began the new year by pledging to oppose Gov. Phil Murphy's plan to legalize the recreational use of marijuana and Thursday night he followed through by voting to adopt an ordinance that prohibits "marijuana cultivation, production testing, manufacturing facilities and retail stores' in the township.

The Chatham Township Committee voted 5-0 to adopt the ordinance at its regular meeting.

In February, some of the same medical marijuana advocates came to argue the benefits of cannabis at the Borough of Chatham Council meeting. Edward "Lefty" Grimes of East Hanover, one of those advocates who addressed the borough council, spoke during the public portion of the meeting on Thursday.

Albert Cruz, Chatham Township attorney, explained in the video below that the ordinance adopted by the committee does not prohibit medical marijuana use.

Chatham Township resident Lori Read spoke during the public portion of the meeting about the problems the legalization of marijuana has caused in Denver (see video below), where she used to live. 

Wayne Burrini of Randolph and Rose McGill of Lawrenceville spoke in favor of cannabis use and asked the committee to reconsider in videos below.
