CHATHAM, NJ - Chatham Township has received a $545,000 grant from the Department of Transportation to install new sidewalks on the north side of Shunpike Road, it was announced at the Chatham Township Committee meeting on Thursday night.

John Ruschke, the township engineer, said that the Safe Routes to School grant would pay for sidewalks on the north side of Shunpike from Lafayette to Pine Street.

It is the third Safe Routes to School grant Chatham Township has received for sidewalks in recent years. The other sidewalk grants are for Lafayette Avenue, from Shunpike to Fairview Avenue, and for the south side of Shunpike Road from Falmouth to Pine Street.

The only downside has been the length of time it has taken to get plans designed and approved through the federal program. The Lafayette sidewalk design plan is now being reviewed. Ruschke said he is asking the DOT to assign a single designer to plan sidewalks for both sides of Shunpike, hoping to cut down the wait time for approval.
