Chatham High graduate Austen Boroff recently became the first female platoon leader to be put in charge of soldiers in a combat environment, according to an article published by 1st Lt. Daniel Johnson of the U.S. Army.

She was chosen last fall to take over 1st platoon, Battery C, 1st Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), in Iraq.
