WAYNE, NJ - Fear the Gear had a very welcome cheerleader at Sunday's Western Wrangle robotics meet at Wayne Hills High School.

Gianna Macri was Fear the Gear’s captain as a Chatham High School senior in 2013-14 when current captains Matt Stasiukevicius and Paul Malatesta were freshmen. The team was happy to advance to the semi-finals in Sunday’s meet in honor of their former leader.

Macri is now a junior at the University of Rochester, majoring in Computer Science. She will be interning at General Electric Digital in California this summer. Fear the Gear competes in New Jersey’s First Tech Challenge robotics league.

First Tech encourages all youth to explore technical fields but makes an extra push to involve young women like Gianna in what used to be the male dominated STEM world. For example, at the Wayne meet, NJ First coordinator Patricia Frascella coached girls from Glen Rock’s Cosmic Goose team in how to improve their engineering notebook.

Fear the Gear is graduating eight seniors from Chatham High School this year, including three girls, many of whom are applying to engineering programs including Aerospace, Chemical and Environmental engineering.
