Chatham's Lafayette Avenue Could be Shut Down for Water Main Replacement

Chatham Township Police Chief Steven Hennelly announced that Lafayette Avenue is likely to be closed down to most traffic in the upcoming week Credits: TAP Chatham

CHATHAM, NJ - While school is closed next week, NJ American Water Co. will try to complete as much work as possible in replacing the water main on Lafayette Avenue in the township, which could result in a complete closure of the road, according to Chatham Township Police Chief Steven Hennelly.

"They want to close it altogether for the week school is out," Hennelly said. "We just need to ask the residents on the side streets along Lafayette Avenue, with the exception of Buttonwood, to go out the opposite way from Lafayette. The only way to get that project done in a week period of time is to shut the road down."

It also was noted at the Chatham Township Committee meeting on Thursday night that the work will begin Friday afternoon. It will be difficult to keep a lane open on the road for passage because the work on the water main replacement will take place in the middle of the road.

Thomas Ciccarone, township administrator, reports on the meeting with NJ American Water and the plans to replace the water main on Lafayette Avenue
