KENILWORTH, NJ - John Schwenck of Chatham and three others who caddie at Fairmount Country Club in Chatham are receiving college tuition grants from the New Jersey State Golf Association.
Schwenck, who caddies at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, is a senior at Penn State University and receives a stipend of $4,800 from the NJSGA.
Fairmount caddies receiving grants include Jake C. Barrett, a sophomore at St. Lawrence University who receives a grant of $3,500 per year; Aidan J. Dougherty, a senior at Villanova University who receives a stipend of $6,000, and Ryan S. Theriault, a junior at The College of New Jersey, who receives a grant of $3,800.
In 2015-16, 200 caddie scholars from 44 NJSGA members clubs were awarded more than $840,000 in scholarship aid. The minimum award is valued at $3,500 and some pay the entire cost of room and board for the entire four years.
The scholarship is available to qualified applicants who have caddied at a participating NJSGA member club for a minimum of two seasons. Full-time attendance as an undergraduate at an institution of higher education accredited by the US Department of Education is required.
Children of private golf club members are not eligible for scholarships.
